Students enrolled in a California private school must be taught in English and provided with instruction in the same areas of study required in the public schools in the state. California law mandates courses of study for grades one through six to include english: the knowledge of appreciation for literature and the language as well as the skills of speaking, reading, listening, spelling, handwriting and composition; mathematics: concepts, operational skills and problem solving; social studies: anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology; scene: biological and physical; visual and performing arts: dance, music, theatre and visual arts; health; physical education.

Attendance must be recorded and indicate absences from school for a half day or more for each school day. Attendance records are to be kept by school authorities in a register. If a student transfers from one school to another the permanent record (or a copy thereof) must be transferred from to the former district to the current district upon a request from the current district at which the student plans to enroll.

California private and home schools do not require a valid California teaching liscence for employee. Teachers must be "persons capable of teaching". All applicants for employment in California private schools must submit two sets of fingerprints to the Department of Justice for a criminal record summary. An employer may not employ an applicant until the background check has been completed.

California private schools must file an affidavit with the Superintendent of Public Instruction between the first and fifteenth of October each year including the following information: the names under which the school has done and is doing business; address of every place of business in California; location of records and custodian of records, names and address of directors and pricinpal officers; school enrollment by grades, nuber of teachers, coeducational or enrollment limited to boys or girls and boarding facilities; school attendance records, courses of study, and faculty information records are true and accurate; criminal record summary information for employees has been obtained.
