PROJECT INTRODUCTION

I developed this database as my capstone project for the Davidsons Honors College at the University of Montana. I am graduating with my Bachelors of Art in Elementary Education as well as with a minor in Business Administration. I have always had a passion for education as well as a desire for continuous learning. The field of education has allowed me to nurture young minds as well as to expand my own knowledge of the learning process. While obtaining my degree I was placed in a variety of public school classrooms. This experience allowed me to observe the implementation of state mandated curriculum, application of best practices, execution of direct instruction and the collection of student data first hand, leading me to question the drill and kill methods used in education today.

This project provided me with the opportunity to explore the realm of nonpublic education through an analysis of state mandated requirements. I chose to focus on the legal requirements of accreditation, curriculum, assessment, facilities, student records as well as administration and personnel. In looking at each of these components of nonpublic educational facilities I was able to recognize common trends throughout the Pacific Northwest as well as within common school structure. I hope that this resource proves to be beneficial to those who are seeking information on not only the format and function of nonpublic educational facilities but the legal structure to be upheld.
