Parents who choose to homeschool within the state of California must file an affidavit to privately educate or "homeschool" their children. A parent who provides homeschool and meets the requirement sof EC Section 33190 may file an affidavit for their student to be exempt from public scholl attendance. However, the filing of an affidavit doesnt ensure exempt status. If the Private School Affidavit is properly filed and the school meets the criteria for a full-time private school, an exemption can be provided by a local school district. This document must be filed annually by families who choose to school at home. Parents are not required to report their decision to privately educate their children to their school district. However, it may be beneficial to inform the district of the intent to homeschool in order to avoid confusion. Public schools are required to verify that the private school affidavit filing requirements have been met in order to verify a child's exemption from compulsory education. California private schools must file an affidavit with the Superintendent of Public Instruction between the first and fifteenth of October each year including the following information: the names under which the school has done and is doing business; address of every place of business in California; location of records and custodian of records, names and address of directors and pricinpal officers; school enrollment by grades, nuber of teachers, coeducational or enrollment limited to boys or girls and boarding facilities; school attendance records, courses of study, and faculty information records are true and accurate; criminal record summary information for employees has been obtained.
