ACCREDITATION STANDARDS

A private school in Oregon is classified as a private elementary or secondary school operated by a person or by a private agency, offering education in kindergarten or grades 1 through 12. Oregon private schools do not need to be accredited. However, accreditation is an option that many private schools choose to pursue as a form of consumer protection.


Oregon private schools do not need to register with the Oregon Department of Education unless they decide to contract with a public school district to provide services. A private school in Oregon does not receive state school funds.


Private schools in Oregon must be classified as business or nonprofit entities and they must comply with all requirements imposed but the jurisdiction, county, city or other locality in which the school is located. Students may attend a private school that is out of district. Students must provide evidence of immunization or a medical or non-medical exemption. Private schools are exempt from Oregon’s compulsory attendance laws. Students’ attendance within an Oregon State private school must be equivalent to that required of public school students.

CURRICULUM

Private schools must ensure that their students acquire the same knowledge as that acquired in courses of study taught in kindergarten through grade 12 in the public schools. The common curriculum goals consist of essential learning skills and common knowledge and skills. Essential learning skills include reading, writing, speaking, listening, mathematics, reasoning and study skills. Common knowledge and skills consist of facts, concepts, principles, rules, procedures and methods of inquiry in the subject areas of english language arts, mathematics, health education, science education, physical education, social studies, music, art, personal finance, second language and culture as well as career education. Additionally, curriculum must include technical education by which occupational preparation is taught through combining the interests and attitudes of students with the skills and experience necessary to become employed, sustain economic independence and enter advanced education and training.

Oregon state private schools are not required to participate in statewide testing. However, many private schools do use some form of summative testing (SAT 10, Iowa Basic, MAPS, NAEP etc.).

FACILITIES

Private schools must meet all state and local health, saftey, and fire and building codes. Additionally,  Oregon private schools must comply with requirements that are imposed by the jurisdiction, county, city or any other locality in which the school is located . The Oregon School Facilities Management Associaton acts as a resource for the planning safety and operations of school facilities.

Students must provide evidence of immunization or a medical or non-medical exemption. Private schools are exempt from Oregon’s compulsory attendance laws. Students’ attendance within an Oregon state private school must be equivalent to that required of public school students. Private schools must follow all Oregon state laws and rules regarding private records. The school must send out student records within 10 days of their request.

ADMINISTRATION AND PERSONNEL

The hired teachers and administrators within Oregon private schools do not need to have a teaching or administrative license or certificate. Each individual private school may set their own policy for teachers, administration and other staff.
